When photographs of human faces are averaged collectively to form a composite image, they turn out to be progressively nearer to the “ideal” picture and are perceived as more engaging. This was first observed in 1883, when Francis Galton overlaid photographic composite images of the faces of vegetarians and criminals to see if there was a typical facial look for each. When doing this, he noticed that the composite pictures were more attractive in comparison with any of the person images.
